From legacy GCP to a governed analytics platform

  • A U.S. healthcare distributor struggled to extract timely analytics from SAP and other enterprise systems straining under growing data volumes.
  • Brillio migrated the organization from a legacy GCP environment to a unified, governed Databricks-based modern data platform.
  • A medallion architecture with bronze, silver, and gold layers structured raw SAP data into curated, business-ready datasets for reporting.
  • Agentic AI using large language models, RAG, and Databricks Genie now extracts and summarizes shipment and warehouse KPIs automatically.

Turning SAP complexity into enterprise-scale intelligence

Challenge

A leading U.S.-based healthcare organization distributes critical-care biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, and plasma products across the country. As its operations scaled, the underlying data environment could no longer keep up. Data lived across SAP and other enterprise systems that handled day-to-day transactions reliably but were increasingly strained when it came to analytics and reporting.

Decision-makers needed faster, more reliable access to insights. Incremental fixes were not going to solve the problem. The organization needed a new foundation.

The technical complexity ran deep. SAP’s highly standardized and normalized data models are designed for transactional integrity, not analytics consumption. Transforming that data into business-ready views required extensive de-normalization, careful table joins, and performance-aware transformations. The existing Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environment was not built to handle these demands at the scale the business required.

At the same time, the platform needed to support near-real-time data synchronization from source systems alongside real-time processing inside Databricks. That raised the stakes for stability and consistency across downstream workloads. The organization needed an architecture that could handle ingestion, transformation, modeling, and reporting within a single governed environment, one that could evolve alongside the business rather than constrain it.

Solution

Brillio designed and implemented a Databricks-based modern data platform, replacing the legacy GCP environment with a cohesive architecture built for both operational reporting and strategic analytics.

Our solution used a medallion architecture with three distinct layers. The bronze layer served as the raw data landing zone, ingesting data from SAP, Salesforce, Azure SQL, and other on-premise and SaaS sources including WellSky, Paycom, and RightNow Inventory. Fivetran served as the primary ingestion mechanism alongside Databricks-native connectors, ensuring automated, reliable data replication while preserving accuracy across systems.

In the silver layer, data was cleansed, enriched, and de-normalized into models tailored specifically to the client’s operational workflows and reporting requirements. Data quality improved at each stage while remaining fully traceable back to its source. The gold layer then produced curated, business-ready datasets functioning as trusted data marts across the organization.

Governance was embedded from the outset rather than added later. We implemented Unity Catalog to provide centralized access control, data lineage, and metadata management across the entire platform. Power BI was integrated as the primary analytics and visualization layer, supporting real-time analytics, enterprise reporting, and self-service exploration for business users.

To extend the platform further, our team enabled Agentic AI using large language models (LLMs) with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and Databricks Genie. This capability supports the automated extraction and summarization of business KPIs related to shipments and warehouse operations, reducing reliance on manual reporting processes.

Faster decisions, stronger governance, and a scalable data foundation

Outcomes

  • Automated ingestion and streamlined transformation pipelines significantly reduced manual effort and improved consistency across all datasets.
  • Reporting accuracy, availability, and timeliness improved across the organization, enabling faster access to reliable operational insights.
  • Unity Catalog strengthened data governance, security, and lineage so that traceability remained intact as data volumes and users grew.
  • The platform now supports advanced analytics and data science use cases, positioning the organization to scale confidently into the future.
